Manage Darker Evenings: Use timer switches or smart lighting to make your home look occupied when it gets dark early.

Discreet Disposal: Do not leave boxes for new tech or expensive items (e.g., TVs, laptops) outside by your bins, as this advertises your new belongings to burglars. Break them down and place them inside the bin.

Keep Valuables Hidden: Ensure jewellery, cash, and electronic devices are not visible through windows or left near doors, letterboxes, or cat flaps.

Layer Protection: Check that all doors and windows are locked, even if you are only stepping out for a few minutes. Consider installing video doorbells or CCTV to act as a deterrent. 

Defrost Safely: Never leave your car engine running unattended while defrosting the windscreen; thieves target these vehicles every winter.

Clear Valuables: Remove all bags, tools, and electronics from view when parked.

Physical Deterrents: Use a steering lock for added protection, especially overnight.

Signal Jamming: Always physically check that car doors are locked after using a key fob, as criminals may use devices to block the locking signal. 

Stay Alert in the Dark: Stick to well-lit, busy routes and avoid using your mobile phone or headphones while walking, as it makes you a target for snatch-and-run crimes.

Vary Routes: If you regularly walk or jog, vary your route to avoid being predictable.

Support the Vulnerable: Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may be more at risk during cold weather or dark nights. 

Report Suspicious Activity: Do not assume someone else will report it; use 101 for non-emergencies or the Metropolitan Police reporting tool.

Emergency: Always dial 999 if a crime is in progress or there is an immediate danger.
